Fast, quiet, solid
My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time.I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price. The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old...

WD Blue 1T Drive - So far so good.
I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow. The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is...

This thing ROCKS! Practically Plug-N-Play!
Very easy to use. Just plug the hard drives in and turn in on. BE SURE to set the switch to the proper connection (USB or eSata) or else the drive enclosure shuts down. This is due to the PowerSync feature. For example, if you are connecting via eSata and the switch is set to USB (default), then the device will detect no power going through USB and shutdown. Apparantely, the other person who gave this item a negative review didn't realise this.I'm using the Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 on a PC running Vista, which is connected to a Rosewill RC-219 PCI Express eSata SATA II Controller Card ([...]Only cons I have, though nothing major is:1. Power connection is on the side, not the back2. Takes a few seconds for each drive to power up and be recognized.I'm planning to buy another enclosure for another PC.Note: According to the documentation, USB 3.0 connections is backware compatible with USB 1.1 & USB 2.0.

Reliable and Inexpensive
This product is a great addition to anyone interested in consolidating their hard drives. The backwards compatible usb 2.0 port works fine on all of my PCs and on Macs that I've tested it on. It's very easy to set-up (< 5 min) But be sure to read the setup card provided (note: USB 3.0 cable provided with case).Pros: Put 4 x 2TB harddrives in case and they were instantly accessible on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7 Ultimate, Ubuntu 10.10, and Snow Leopard.Cons: None so far. (This is the second one I am buying)

Exactly what I was looking for
Easily handles my 4 x 2TB drives on eSATA and USB3.0. I tested both interfaces and getting over 100MB/sec sustained reads on both interfaces! I am using this for a Windows Home Server (WHS) and it is perfect since it does not do RAID, so that I can let WHS handle folder duplication instead. I intend to buy another one of these to expand my WHS capacity in the near future. This is one of the few enclosures I could find that does not come with some kind of crappy (as in low-end) built-in RAID controller. When using in WHS, it is preferable to *not* use RAID and to let WHS do its folder duplication, so this is perfect and cheap for that purpose. Make sure your eSATA ports can handle a port multiplier or you will only see one drive or none.Cons:None so far. Documentation was a little weak, but not hard to figure out.I did think it was broken at one point because its default setting is to power down if it does not detect a connection to...

Great enclosure
This enclosure is well made and has all the connections you could want, USB, FW400/800, and eSATA. It was very easy to install and format the drives. I'm running two 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3s in RAID 1, so far works great. You can easily choose between RAID 0 and 1 by setting the DIP switch on the back. I like the design of the enclosure also, sturdy and looks sleek and modern. This enclosure is all metal, no plastic, which will help with cooling. The small fan inside isn't too loud and does a great job of cooling the drives. After leaving the drives on all day, the enclosure is still about room temperature to the touch. You can set the fan to low, high, automatic, or off. The menus on the LCD screen are fairly easy to navigate. Overall a great product at a reasonable price.

Easy to set up and use and FAST
This enclosure almost took more time to unpack than to install two disks and create a Raid 0 scratch disk. The things I noticed as soon as I opened the box were the quality of the unit's fit/finish, the power supply and cables. After installing two 1TB drives, I connected it to my Mac Pro with the Firewire 800 connection and powered the enclosure on. Both disks (from a previous mirrored array) were recognized immediately, the front panel prompted me for type of Raid desired (0 or 1) and after I selected 0, the striped volume was created and ready for initialization on the Mac in less than a minute. Display offers all the info on the system and drives I need. Fan is on all the time, but at relatively low RPM (3300), and the fan noise is masked by the drives anyway. After rebooting everything and connecting via eSATA, I set up the disk as the scratch disk for an editing session in Final Cut Express. Excellent performance, and after thrashing on the drives for a couple hours,...

Awesome!
Okay, let me bring you up to speed on my situation. My first reason for getting an external drive was to have a back up. I then decided that a dual drive (non-RAID) would allow me to have a time machine drive and a clone drive. So, I got an OWC Mercury Pro AL enclosure and two 750GB drives. That was more than enough since my Mac is only 500GB. Everything had been great for over a year and a half now. Well my iphoto file is like a weed being feed plant food. I am up to almost 100GB for iphoto alone and growing. I don't know about most people but, my iphoto file is one if not the most important file on my drive. So off to get another external drive enclosure (I say enclosure, because why would you let someone else pick your hard drive for you. It is very rare that you will get the best drive) for iphoto. The best solution was RAID 1 mirror. I don't understand why more people don't use RAID 1 for iphoto. Putting all your photos on a single drive and it fails, oops! Can you recover...

Great Value
Great value here - can't think of anything else in this price range that offers this type of RAID support (0, 1, 5, 6, 10), port count (8) and PCI-E 2.0. I purchased this to upgrade a general-use server (Win2008) for a set of WD RE4 already on hand. 8-ports for sub-$200 - this thing is a bargain, and leaves lots of room for expansion. The negative reviews here raised no major concerns (common, general controller issues - easy to avoid). I'm not new to RAID, and this controller is based on existing product lines - no surprises, aside from RAID 6.InstallationStandard and simple enough - physically install the card, boot the system and allow the card's BIOS to post and pass, then install the driver when prompted by Windows (on the included CD, though I recommend downloading the current driver and Web interface, which now has RAID 6 support). No setup utility is needed - Device Manager was able to easily locate the driver. Installing the Web Interface is simple...

Great card for the price
Got this card for $119, very low cost knowing that you need at least one or two SFF-8087 Forward Breakout cables to connect from SAS to SATA your drives which run between $15 to $35 each.As soon as I got the card I downloaded the new firmware 1.2 which grants you access to RAID 6, latest web interface (2.x) and drivers. I'm using Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition and the card and drives are recognized perfectly.I'm running 4*500GB Samsung F3 in RAID 5, I get 280MB Read/Write and 4*640GB WD in RAID 5, I get 230MB Write and 280 Read which I guess is pretty good. The new web interface is pretty good and snappy compared to the former one which was buggy (as I was told) and setting the RAID array was easy. By default the foreground initialization is set. As I'm not patient, I set the quick initialization which takes a couple of second to prepare your drives. Looks like the Quick Format option in Windows vs Format which takes for ever.The...

Absolute bargain RAID 6 controller!
Perfect for general Windows-based servers - capacity and security are usually more important than performance, but the 6G SAS support doesn't hurt.I'm not new to RAID (or highpoint) controllers, so I was sure to pick this up sooner or later. Not disappointed! The RAID 5 and 6 performance was surprising considering it lacks a BBU/memory option like some of HighPoint's other RAID controllers (I have used their 4300 series for several years).RAID 6 appears to be a new feature for this series, and it doesn't support it out of the box (at least not what I was shipped). If you are interested (of course, right!) be sure to the download the updates from the product page.Their driver support is also better than expected (all major Windows releases, and it appears to support many Linux dist.).I haven't contacted their support dept. for this model, but have had no major problems with them in the past. Broken record here (read the other reviews) but I...

Possibly a poor choice for mid-2010 MacBook Pro
I had a horrific time getting this drive to work as a replacement in my mid-2010 MacBook Pro (MC375LL/A), but ironically, I only experienced issues under Mac OS X (Snow Leopard and Lion). While the installers for Snow Leopard and Lion and their respective Disk Utility applications both failed to recognize the existence of my new hard drive altogether when booted directly from DVD, the installer for Windows 7 happily recognized the drive right from the get-go and threw itself onto it. I managed to get Mac OS X Lion installed on the new drive by popping my old hard drive into a USB enclosure, booting Mac OS X Lion from the old hard drive by holding down Option at power-up, and running the Mac OS X Lion installer from there, pointing it at the new drive; I never could get this method to work with Snow Leopard. Once up and running, however, it was all but reliable with constant beach-balling, even under little to no CPU load, that required a hard power-off to escape from each time it...

There are two ways to deploy RAID technology, one is Software RAID in the sense of an operating system and the other is a hardware dedicated to it. In the case of a software , the CPU cycles of General computing are used for completing a RAID... However, depending upon the RAID levels, the cost factor comes into play and this factor acts as selection criteria, from among the different RAID levels. However, the performance of the whole system will be depleting and so the software RAID operation is now extinct, as the cost of hardware RAID setup has come down drastically. Software RAID vs. Hardware RAID. The cost factor is the driving force, while choosing RAID levels and depending on the needs of an organization, the technology can serve in accordance with the IT needs. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, which is also read as Redundant Array of Independent Disks.

The problem with this model is that there is always going to be some distance (and animosity) between players at different difficulty levels – “casual” players are derided by “hardcore” players for not being willing to put the time and effort into... (That is, incidentally, completely understandable – because raids require items beyond player skill, like food buffs and potions, each player death or group wipe is a set of consumables wasted, and so the fewer player deaths and group wipes a raid... in Rift, some raids are 10-player raids and some are 20-player raids, while in World of Warcraft (at least in its most recent incarnation. As the raid’s skill level goes up, the raids’ difficulties go up, and the value of the items dropped by the raid goes up as well. Moreover, it’s a system that fundamentally disadvantages players who don’t get an early start in raiding or skilled players who only have the opportunity to play with 10 other people, because by and large, when raiders are putting together a group... As a further improvement, allow the leader of raid groups below a certain skill level to reset the raid as many times as she wants, but limit loot to the first boss kill per week. it started out like Rift), each raid has a 10-player and 25-player version, plus difficulty levels within the player-count “flavors”. average the raid skill levels of each member of the raid.
