A winner -- professional quality recording at a breakthrough price!
This is a fantastic little recorder that is, I think, probably the least expensive audio recorder available capable of making professional quality recordings. I use it three ways -- either on it's own (using its' built-in microphones), with an external Sony ECM-MS957 stereo microphone, or with an external RODE NT4 stereo microphone. Also, just for reference, I edit all my recordings on a system that has very high resolution -- a Grace M902 D/A converter driving AKG K701 headphones.I record larger groups, predominately gospel choirs, and buying this recorder made a huge improvement in the quality of my recordings. I previously used a Sony MZ-M200 Hi-MD recorder in linear PCM mode. Using the PCM-D50 with the same microphone and at the same recording quality settings, here's what I have observed:1. A very large improvement in the frequency response of my recordings. There is much better extension on both the low and the high end. This is probably...

Functional and Sturdy MD/Portable DAT Replacement - Finally!
Quality-wise, this is the MiniDisc replacement people have been looking for. Sony kept out extras such as quad mic setups, overdubbing, MP3 recording, and cheap XLR inputs to focus on getting the basics right: clean mic input, useful limiting, durability (metal casing--what most MiniDisc units had, but few flash recorders currently have), and clean playback (accurate monitoring). A perk is that it has great battery life (very frequent recording and playback throughout the day = change the batteries once every 2-3 days.)Skip the rest and get this if you want to spend less than $1200 to replace your old MiniDisc or portable sub-$600 DAT setup. If you want something better, save for the Sound Devices 702/722 (oddly numbered like the old Sharp MD 702/722 units).I've now recorded rehearsals and individual practice sessions (orchestra/trombone) and can say this unit does an adequate job of recording. It's not great like a multi-mic, pro recording chain setup can be,...

Cleanest preamp-easy to operate-movable mics
Yes, the built in mics are sensitive in this unit but if you use common sense when recording it is not a problem. I have used this unit with the built-in mics (that's why they put a camera tripod thread on the bottom), with my $300 AT822 stereo mic (this is an incredible combo for field recording) and directly from a mixing board. If you are going to record MP3 files or tunes for your iPod get something else. If you want professional quality,24 bit, 96kHz .wav files or 6 hours and 25 minutes of CD quality recording with the 4gb of internal memory it comes with, then take a close look at the D50. Metal housing, great display, runs on four AA batteries. Lots of other cool, useful features. If you appreciate CLEAN preamps, this is the best currently available for the money. Oade Brothers will do mods to Marantz, Tascam, Fostex and Edirol recorders but it costs $$$.

Another Sony knockout--but with one quibble
I'm a journalist who does interviews. I don't record "voice," much less music. I've used Sony's EV500 mono tape recorder--the high-end standard for print journalists--for over 20 years. My colleagues thought it was overkill to switch to stereo. When I showed them my new Sony PCM-10 (purchased in October 2009), they thought it was pretty cool, but when I told them the price, they thought it was too expensive (journalists are congenitally cheap; goes with the salary). The PCM-10 lets you record in 10 modes, including uncompressed LPCM and compressed MP3, so we did a test recording (that is, an interview) in the highest-quality stereo mode: LPCM 96kHz/24 bit. Well! Let me tell you: Eyebrows arched. The sound was spectacular. One guy grumped--beforehand--that he didn't need interviewees to sound like Maria Callas. Mono was good enough. Then I played it back. He listened. He stroked his chin. "How much did you say that was?" he asked. Because, if you listen to a lot of recorded...

Fantastic Recorder
I had a Zoom H4n for about a week, and I returned it, and got the Sony PCM-M10. It ended up being a nice trade for me. The mics and preamps on the Zoom were fantastic, but the Sony's are as good, if not better, quality than the H4n. The H4n is a multi-tracker, and has XLR inputs, etc., making it a different type of device than the Sony, and the H4n was very large in the hand, making it a little too big for subtle hand-held recordings, and other situations where you don't want the recorder to be the center of attention. The mics on the Sony are fixed in place at 90 degrees, unlike the Zoom where you can change from 90 to 120 degrees with a twist function. I didn't change to the Sony necessary for the functionality as much as the form-factor. The Sony is compact and is a little more discreet, making it almost (visually) pass as an MP3 player in appearance. It is the same size as an iPhone, but a little thicker, and it feels nice and solid in the hand.Another thing I might...

Sony pro quality at a reasonable price
The is the benchmark portable digital recorder, and Sony's M10 blows it away. The M10 is a very small recorder, roughly the same shape as an iPhone but as thick as a deck of playing cards. The buttons are firm, and the recording level wheel stays where you leave it. You get LEDs for -12db and overload for each of the two microphones.Sound quality is noticeably better than the H4. There is very little handling noise, unless the recording gain is cranked way up. If you do need to turn up the gain, just use the included wired remote to start and stop the recorder. The noise floor is present when you are recording quiet sounds with the gain up, but it seems easier to avoid than with the Zoom.A tripod socket is built in to the bottom of the M10, just above the twin AA battery bay. You can record to the...

One of the best field recorders out there
Just like the customer above me, I have a fairly early model (serial 2211). I don't imagine them having any revisions or anything, because this unit is really solid. Let me start by saying that this device should not be considered a Mic in its own right. Sure, it has two condenser microphones stuck on top to record in stereo, but I wouldn't use these mics in any studio unless I had nothing better. This unit is for those people who want to record in the field, and be able to capture 4 tracks of audio in a handheld device.First, the build quality. Obviously Zoom took a lot of criticism to heart from their first H2 and H4 models. The H4n sports a "rubberized" hardshell design that's easy to grip, and seems to stand up well to surface scratches. (Mind you, the rubber texture can attract greasy fingerprints which can get annoying if you're a gadget freak like me). The top of the unit where the mics are is metal. There is some plastic on the unit, but definitely better designed...

Kodak Zi8 + Zoom H4n Audio Test + Review
Customer Video Review Length:: 1:42 MinsAfter having done a quick video test for the Kodak Zi8, I decided to do something which would focus more on its audio recording capabilities. I also wanted to test the Zoom H4n, a portable flash recorded I recently purchased... so, here I am, killing two birds with one stone.I setup the Kodak Zi8 about 5 feet from the sound source, which is an upright piano... that's me noodling on it. The Zi8 is mounted on a tripod.About 15 feet away from the piano, I've setup the Zoom H4n recorder. This unit has an XY stereo microphone built into it. It also has the ability to record two inputs, in the form of XLR or 1/4-inch. So, we'll be hearing the built in XY microphone on the unit as well as a pair of AKG 414s which I positioned above the piano, pointing into the open lid."Kodak Zi8 Internal Microphone"Here we hear the internal microphone on the Zi8. Mono, a bit noisy and perhaps a little too close to the piano to capture a...

Impressive with minor flaws
In looking for a portable handheld recorder for scratch tracks and samples, I weighed the benefits of a few of the handhelds available today and settled on the H4n. The other recorders on my short list were the Edirol R-09 and Sony PCM-D50, and also the H4. So far the H4n hasn't disappointed.I settled on the Zoom H4n for a couple of reasons:1) 1/4" and XLR inputs with phantom power - Very handy for throwing a mic on a kick and snare, and the H4n will record those plus the internal condensor simultaneously, which is perfect to get the rest of the drum kit for some quick loop scratch tracks.2) More geeked out features than the others - They are not needed but still fun to have. The H4n is like the Leatherman of handheld pocket recorders with plenty of built in effects (which sound really good btw), built in 4 track recorder mode, tuners and metronome, playback speed control, MP3 encoder, acts as USB audio interface (both input and output), built in...

High-priced accessory that should be included in cost of PCM-D50
This windscreen is absolutely essential for routine use of the PCM-D50. I've used it to help ensure that vocal plosives are minimized and that I can record outdoors in moderately windy conditions. That said, there's no reason why what's essentially a fuzzy sock end should cost $50. But unless you can come up with alternative yourself, you'll need this accessory. Shame on Sony for not including it with this high-end digital recorder.

Customer Review

the Sony PCM-D1 is a dream
I bought my PCM-D1 nearly a year ago, and I've been quite satisfied with it. I've used it to record acoustic music and field recordings in Japan and Brazil. The microphones are extremely sensitive and the circuitry extremely low-noise for crystal clear recordings. The sonic quality of the recordings is stellar. The lack of phantom power for an external mic is a bit of a bummer, but other gear on the market allows you to work around this limitation, and I believe Sony is going to introduce a solution this year. The unit itself is very attractively designed, practical to use, and comes with rechargeable batteries, a battery charger, AC power adapter, windscreen, case and mini-tripod.I've read a lot of criticism of this unit on the web, but it's usually for very special circumstances. One guy said it was "worthless" because it takes too long to change the batteries (you can do it under a minute). But I've been using this unit for a year and I haven't run into a...

Excellent Field Recorder
I've been recording nature sounds with this recorder for the last year. By mounting it on a tripod, either stand-alone or on a gorilla-pod clinging to a tree branch, I've been able to leave the recorder out doing it's thing for up to 4 hours on one battery pack and memory card. This recorder has captured some beautiful dawn chorus' while I was away recording elsewhere. I've added a home-made fuzzy wind screen to the fuzzy I purchased from Sony and the two control wind noise well. This whole system with recorder and extra batteries and memory cards fits into a small fanny pack. My principle recording system consists of a Sound Devices 722 with Sennheiser MKH 30/40 mics which do give a better recording. However, this makes a great back-up and secondary system when I'm out on site and want to record in two locations at once. It is compact enough to take along when my full system would be awkward. Very easy to use. Easy to download files to my computer with the USB port. One...

Simply the BEST.
I have tried several field recorders including the Nagra, Zoom H4, PCM-D50 and now the PCM-D1. This product is in a class by it's self. The microphone pre-amps are extremely quiet. The built in mics are extremely high quality. (Much better than the others.) The build quality is superior. The titanium & magnesium case is just beautiful. The controls & menus are clear and direct. Not a lot of bells & whistles... Just CLEAN sound.Of course it does not have XLR inputs like the Zoom H4. But you CAN always add the Sony XLR adapter that has phantom power... Or use an external mixer. And unlike the Zoom H4 the PCM-D1 mic inputs actually record SOUND not HISS & DISTORTION. I can't say enough good things about this product. Yes there is a cheaper PCM-D50 and the Zoom H4 and perhaps the over hyped Korg 1 bit models... NONE of these other units can compare for sound quality. NONE of these other units have truly professional sounding mic-preamps. If you want a cheap...

Great protection for the PCM-D50
I don't use this as a carrying case by itself. I put the PCM-D50 into this case, then put the case into whatever bag I'm using to haul my stuff. I doubt I would ever attach the straps to the case and dangle it over my shoulder or around my neck.PROS: Semi-hard shell protects recorder from impact. Can easily fit inside a camera bag or messenger bag.CONS: Even the discount price of about $35 is steep -- and considering that the PCM-D50 is a premium product, the LCPCMD50G case should have been included with the recorder. Same goes for the ADPPCM1 windscreen, which looks like a dead mouse and costs $43.95.

Sony LCPCMD50G Carrying Case PCM-D50
Great case for my Sony PCM-D50. The PCM-D50 is made of metal and plastic. It is beautiful but I shudder to think what would happen to it if I dropped it from more than 6 inches. The Sony carrying case is thick and padded. If I dropped the device I believe the case would definitely protect if from a fall of 2 feet. More than that I cannot say nor do I ever want to find out. If you buy the Sony PCM-D50 you must buy the carrying case. Without it your a fool who has no qualms throwing $450.00 out the window.

Some kind of jog wheel with dedicated menu scrolling and section buttons (i. e. like the classic iPod scroll wheel) would be far better than its current method of using play and fast forward. This is a problem because sometimes you need to set levels before you have any reference level on the meters. A plus would be to have the level displayed (i. e. 1-10, in addition to the peak) on the display.

I contacted Sony, and they have said that the PCM-D50 is not being discontinued, but the D1 is. So, keep buying them awesome Sony hand-held recorders. UPDATE #2: Contacted Sony rep again, and asked about this info given by the rep that Jake spoke to. I asked if that rep might have been confused. looks like the sony pro site still lists the D50 as available. I actually had a D50 go bad on me and got a new one from Sony within a week or so. Preamp crapped out. Someone heard from a different Sony rep that they are going to be discontinued. With the D50 off the market, I'm not sure which of the other handhelds will hold the top rank with regards to internal mics in the sub $600 category.
